WhatsApp's status feature gets a ton of new features, including voice and reactions

Today, WhatsApp announces that the Status feature is getting a ton of new features. Updates that enable all of these new features are already rolling out to users around the world and should be available to everyone who uses WhatsApp “in the coming weeks.”

So what exactly is new, you wonder? First, you can now save and share voicemails as status messages. These can last up to 30 seconds. Then you can update your privacy settings by status, so you can choose who can see (or hear) your status each time you update it. As you’d expect, your most recent audience selection is saved and then used as the default for your next status.

Status reactions let you respond to status updates, and it was apparently the most requested feature for WhatsApp after launching reactions in chats last year. You can quickly respond to any status by swiping up and tapping one of eight emojis. And of course, you can always reply with text, voicemail, or stickers.

A new status profile ring will be present around your contact’s profile picture whenever they share a status update, and it will be visible in the chat list, group participant lists, and section contact information.

Finally, link previews are now enabled for statuses, just like chats. So when you post a link on your status, the preview automatically pops up and makes your status look better, while giving your contacts an idea of what the link is before they click on it. .
