In collaboration with NTT DATA Italia, the Vatican Library has introduced a new initiative to preserve its extensive manuscript collection by leveraging blockchain technology, and will distribute NFTs to donors and social media users in Italy.
Announced on Monday, the “Web3 Support Project” aims to expand the library’s online community and engage supporters through modern technology. Participants who share the project on social media until July 16 will receive a “Silver NFT,” providing access to 15 different manuscripts while donors will receive a “Gold NFT,” granting access to 21 manuscripts.
These soulbound NFTs are non-transferable and permanently linked to the recipient’s digital wallet.
Future Application and Vision for Accessibility
A proof-of-concept on OpenSea shows that Polygon-based NFTs have been distributed to 419 owners thus far.
NTT DATA Italia has been collaborating with the Vatican Library since 2014 to preserve its historic documents, utilizing its digital archive service, AMLAD, which includes over 2 million assets.
Don Mauro Mantovani, Prefect of the Vatican Library, acknowledged NTT DATA Italia’s role in conserving the library’s cultural heritage and shared possible future applications, such as immersive experiences to view historic assets through extended reality.
Ludovico Diaz, CEO of NTT DATA Italia, emphasized their goal to make the cultural heritage of the Vatican Library accessible through this initiative. “We will continue this important work of conservation and dissemination of cultural heritage, aiming to connect institutions that own valuable digital content with users from all over the world, extending the use of blockchain digital technology to other sectors such as education and entertainment,” he stated according to a translated press release.
