Oppo Find N2 Flip Review: Is Oppo's first foldable clamshell better than the Galaxy Z Flip 4?

Oppo as a brand has become popular for its mid-range devices since it set foot in India. Lately, the company is known for its popular Reno series of devices which covers the mid-range segment, while its subsidiary, OnePlus, has focused on the high-end segment with smartphones priced above Rs. 60 000. So far, Oppo has launched a few high-end handsets including the Oppo Find X, and more recently, the Oppo Find X2, which was the latest high-end device to come to India. While the Oppo Find X2 also arrived after a long hiatus, the launch of the Find N2 Flip, the company’s first foldable clamshell, surely turned out to be a move no one expected. Surprise or not, Oppo seems to be back in the premium game as it takes Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 4 head-on.

On this week’s episode of the Gadgets 360 Orbital podcast, guest host and lead reviewer Sheldon Pinto (that’s me) talks to reviews editor Roydon Cerejo, who spent several weeks with the Oppo Find N2 Flip. We discussed everything from its new hinge design, to its larger than usual cover screen, to its new and interesting software. And how some of them compare to the only other vertical foldable available in the Indian market, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4.

Oppo recently launched its foldable smartphones, the Find N2 and Find N2 Flip, which were officially announced in China, and on both the company decided to bring its vertical foldable smartphone to the global markets and to India. We start with a bit of history, as the Find N2 models aren’t Oppo’s first foldable devices. Oppo announced its Find N in 2021, which was of the horizontal-folding variety, but it was also limited to the company’s home market.

Surprisingly, the Oppo Find N2 Flip seems to be a direct competitor to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 4 and there is no better indicator than its price, which is an Rs premium. 89,999. Oppo’s Find N2 Flip seems like a bold move as Samsung is so far the only company in India to offer foldable devices.

What stands out about the Oppo Find N2 is its larger-than-usual 3.26-inch cover screen, something that’s long been on our wish list for vertically folding devices. Oppo has also done a good job optimizing this display with plenty of full-size gestures, controls and notifications visible on the vertically positioned outer screen.

Also new is Oppo’s Flexion hinge, which keeps the inner display flexible in a U-shaped curve, which, in addition to reducing long-term damage, also helps reduce crease when unfolded. However, this new hinge has its downsides as it only stays open at certain angles. Oppo’s first foldable in India also lacks an IP rating, which has been available on Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip models for some time. Oppo is also taking advantage of the phone’s foldable interior screen by using its FlexForm software capabilities, which allow users to split the screen heightwise when using certain apps.

Oppo has also teamed up with camera maker Hasselblad, which adds a visually different Pro mode and additional features to its main camera. Apart from its missing IP rating, the phone also lacks wireless charging, another feature Samsung has managed to squeeze into its foldable. However, wired charging at 44W certainly seems faster than the competition.
