Ms. Marvel Episode 4: Fawad Khan playing Hasan, Kamala Khan's great-grandfather

Ms. Marvel episode 4 – now available on Disney+ and Disney+ Hotstar – transported the new Marvel Cinematic Universe series to Pakistan’s largest city, Karachi, fulfilling Nani’s (Samina Ahmed) wish that was set up at the end of the previous episode. In doing so, he was able to touch the ancestors of Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), with his Nani – his maternal grandmother – telling his granddaughter more about his own mother, Aisha (Mehwish Hayat). And that’s where Pakistani star Fawad Khan made his first whirlwind appearance and missed out on Ms. Marvel. As Episode 4 ended in a way to suggest that Ms. Marvel Episode 5 would give us more Pakistan, we don’t know about Khan.

Spoilers ahead for Ms. Marvel episode 4. Proceed at your own risk.

Ms. Marvel: who is Hasan?

The essence of Ms. Marvel Episode 4 was dedicated to Kamala trying to find out more about herself and her past. Her Nani confirmed to her face that she was a Djinn. Just before that, Nani/Sana showed Kamala a picture of her father, Hasan – Nana from Kamala, usually grandfather but here great-grandfather – holding hands with a young Sana. Although the photo was too grainy, it was impossible to tell who the actor playing him was, Ms. Marvel The episode 4 credits revealed Fawad Khan playing Hasan.

Nani even repeated his harrowing escape from India during the score, which sent Kamala wandering around Karachi train station, looking for clues. There she met Kareem (Aramis Knight) who then introduced her to Waleed (Farhan Akhtar). Knight and Akhtar play members of the Red Dagger, a vigilante group that operates out of Karachi. With that, Ms. Marvel gave us the first Pakistani superheroes in the MCU. (Kamala is Pakistani-American. And she’s clearly more of the latter than the former, as her cousins more or less say Ms. Marvel episode 4.)

Additionally, the Red Daggers also gave us a glimpse into the Underworld world, telling us how the Noor separate our world from theirs. And if they broke that barrier, their world would essentially take over ours, erasing everything we know. Meanwhile, the four illegals – who were introduced on Ms. Marvel episode 3 – escaped from prison and followed Kamala halfway around the world to Karachi. In the ensuing chase, Waleed gave his life to protect Kamala and Kareem. No one has ever truly died in the MCU, but it seemed like Akthar’s career in the MCU ended there.

But while Akhtar’s debut was expected on Ms. Marvel episode 4 thanks to a one-minute clip, Khan was not. The 40-year-old Pakistani actor’s presence in the new MCU series has been known for a while now, but we had no clarity on his character until this week’s episode. We still know very little about him, considering he only appeared in one photo. Could we hear more about him next week on Ms. Marvel episode 5?

After all, Ms. Marvel Episode 4 ended with Kamala seemingly transported back in time to the Score Age. Hasan would be the right age in those years to be played by Khan, and I have a feeling Marvel is going to take us through the decades. Ms. Marvel episode 5. This would help sketch out the history of the Khan family and their connection to the bracelet, with Kamala being able to experience it all first hand – sort of. The penultimate episode before the series finale is the typical place to do this kind of flashback info dump.

Ms. Marvel episode 5 release date and time

Moreover, it makes no sense to throw away one of Pakistan’s most famous faces, just so that it appears in a single faded photo. I imagine that Fawad Khan will play a bigger role in Ms. Marvel episode 5, Wednesday, July 6 at 12 p.m. PT / 12:30 p.m. IST on Disney+ and Disney+ Hotstar. In India, Ms. Marvel is available in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam.
