The Dank Crypt in Baldur’s Gate 3 contains a terrible trap that threatens to wipe your party if you don’t respect it. You can open the Dank Crypt Sarcophagus Trap in BG3 in many ways, but there are some that are much easier than others.

Here are all the hints and tips you’ll need if you don’t fancy save-scumming your way through.

How to disarm the Sarcophagus trap in BG3

The best and safest option to disarm the Sarcophagus trap in BG3 is using a Trap Disarm Toolkit, which will fully disarm the Sarcophagus trap. If you don’t have any in your Inventory, you may need to leave the Dank Crypt to purchase some. Thankfully, you can get them in the Emerald Grove, where you will find a vendor called Arron just to the north of the main entrance, and he will be happy to sell or trade with you.

As a rule of thumb, I always have multiple Trap Disarm Toolkits on hand because they can be helpful when exploring unknown areas. You get to keep the kit as long you successfully disarm the trap. However, failing to disarm it will cause the kit to break.

Return to the Dank Crypt when you have a few of them in your Inventory and disarm the Sarcophagus trap by following these steps:

  1. Carefully enter the Sarcophagus room.
  2. Ensure you have a Rogue, like Astarion, or a Bard on your team, as these classes have high Dexterity levels. This makes passing Sleight of Hand checks is much easier.
  3. Right-click on the Sarcophagus while piloting your Rogue or Bard.
  4. Select the Disarm option.

Hopefully, with some luck and by using your bonuses, you’ll be able to pass the Dexterity check with ease to disable the Sarcophagus trap. But you can also stop the Sarcophagus trap from going off if you aren’t confident in your ability to disarm it.

What does the Sarcophagus trap in the Dank Crypt do in BG3?

The Sarcophagus trap works by spewing grease out of six vents on the floor and then launching fiery bolts from gargoyle heads on the walls. When the fire meets the grease, you get a giant explosion that will annihilate your party.

You don’t want to mess around with this, so our plan will be to disarm the trap, even though there are ways to work around it if you wish.

To stop the Sarcophagus trap, the easiest thing to do is cover the grease vents with boxes. You can see all the vents marked in the image above. However, you’ll see them if you pass a Perception check, so you’ll want someone like Shadowheart, who has high levels of Wisdom on your team because she can pass these checks pretty easily.

You’ll notice various boxes around the room that you can move, and you can prevent the grease from erupting from the vents by dragging and dropping these boxes. This is a handy thing you can do in Baldur’s Gate 3, and you would be amazed how many times it can come in handy.

Tip:

You can click on an object, drag it, and drop it within a certain radius if you’re standing close to it. And you can hopscotch the item around the room to place it where you need it.

Although you’ve prevented the grease from escaping the vents, you still have the bolts to worry about.

How to disable the Gargoyle heads in the Dank Crypt in BG3

You can disable the Gargoyle heads that shoot the fiery arrows by pressing the buttons around the room. You will need to pass another Perception check to see them. However, you can also see them if you highlight the area.

You can interact with the Sarcophagus once the traps and vents are disabled.

What is inside the Sarcophagus in BG3?

You’ll find a spear called The Watcher’s Guide and an Engraved Key inside the Sarcophagus in the Dank Crypt. This key will open the heavy oak door in the first room of the Dank Crypt.

The Watcher’s Guide is a spear that will do 1-8 Piercing damage. It is an Uncommon weapon and comes with the Death’s Promise trait. When you miss a target, the next Attack Roll for the wielder against that target will gain True Strike. True Strike is used to give Advantage on your attacks. Proficiency with the weapon type will also give the user Rush Attack. This allows them to rush forward and attack the first enemy in their path, potentially pushing them off balance. Doing this does not provoke attacks of opportunity.

For the Engraved Key, keep in mind this will end up on your Keychain. It will not be a separate item in your Inventory. The Keychain will store the keys you pick up, so if you are wondering what you have in your possession, right-click and select Open to see them.

The Dank Crypt is one of the first dungeons you’ll experience in BG3. It’s also where you’ll find Withers, the Amulet of Whispers, and where you’ll complete the Explore the Ruins quest.
