Today, Apple held its “Let Loose” event, where, in the span of 38 minutes, the company showed off its newest and most advanced iPad hardware to date. There were also some software surprises.

iPad Pro M4
The rumors were true: Apple launched its next-generation M4 chip in the new iPad Pro, which is on sale now and available May 15. This gives the iPad line, at least for now, the most advanced chip Apple makes.
Besides the major performance improvement coming from the M4, the new iPad Pro also comes with a major display upgrade. Apple calls this new display the Ultra Retina XDR. It is powered by OLED and available on 11-inch and 13-inch models. There is also a nano-textured glass option for the first time.
Other notable features of the iPad Pro include the slimmer industrial design and the front-facing camera moving to the edge of the landscape.
iPad Air 6, now with a 13-inch model
It was a good day for fans of large-screen iPads, as the iPad Air 6 expanded the Air lineup to include two models, a 13-inch joining the existing 11-inch size. Both sizes are available to order now and will ship on May 15.
The new iPad Air features an M2 chip, follows the landscape front-facing camera trend, offers higher starting storage levels, and more.
Apple Pencil Pro
Both the iPad Pro M4 and the iPad Air 6 are compatible with Apple’s latest generation Pencil model: the Apple Pencil Pro.
The Pencil Pro includes a new tap gesture that can be used by apps to provide a variety of different custom actions. A built-in gyroscope allows the pencil to be rolled for greater precision with the tool you are using. The device also includes Find My integration.
Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro
There is a new Magic Keyboard that pairs exclusively with the iPad Pro M4. It promises to be thinner and lighter than the previous Magic Keyboard, while still adding pro features like a larger trackpad and a row of functions.
Final Cut Pro 2 and Logic Pro 2 for iPad
For years, Apple has released powerful new iPad hardware without offering much software history. There is particularly a lack of compelling stories about proprietary software. But today things were different.
Final Cut Pro 2 and Logic Pro 2 for iPad have been touted as good examples of professional iPad apps created by Apple. They demonstrated the benefits of the powerful new hardware launched by showcasing advanced features such as Live Multicam and stem splitting.
Final Cut Camera app
A surprise app announced today was Final Cut Camera, a new app for iPhone and iPad launching later this spring. The free, proprietary app will directly support the new Live Multicam feature found in Final Cut Pro for iPad. It will also serve as a standalone video capture utility for professionals who need access to advanced manual controls.
What hasn’t been announced: iPad mini or iPad base
As expected, Apple had no news to share regarding the iPad mini or base iPad. Updates for both devices are expected later this year.
Despite the lack of new hardware, Apple implemented an unannounced change for the base iPad: its 10th generation model now starts at the lower price of $349, while the 9th generation option has been discontinued.
iPad Event Recap
After a year in which no iPad hardware received updates, Apple should have given its tablet line some love. Today’s announcements were all about the top tier of iPad hardware, with the new iPad Pro M4 and iPad Air 6 moving the iPad line forward in key ways.
With these iPad versions out of the way, Apple can now turn its attention to the various operating system updates that are expected to be revealed at an AI-focused WWDC taking place in June.
