The Carey Lumeng Laboratory in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Michigan is looking for a Bioinformatician-Computational Biologist to assist in the analysis of high throughput sequencing transcriptomic data including single cell RNA sequencing and bulk RNA sequencing datasets.

The Lumeng Lab focuses on the mechanisms by which obesity has a negative impact on health and disease using a range of state of the art approaches in animal models and translational research in humans. Specifically, our laboratory is interested in adipose tissue biology and the relationship between obesity-induced inflammation and metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes. The lab collaborates closely with clinical and basic science researchers interested in adipose tissue biology and bioinformatic approaches. Additional information about the lab can be found at http://bit.ly/lumeng-lab.

Projects in the lab relate to the use of single cell and single nuclear RNA sequencing to interrogate cellular diversity in adipose tissue samples using in vivo and in vitro approaches. Experimental approaches include multiomic analysis of single cell data and development of spatial methods in adipose tissue samples. Opportunities for wet bench work experience are available, but will not be the primary responsibility of this position. Bulk RNAsequencing methods are also used in animal models and human samples.

The Bioinformatician will interact with graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, research technicians and faculty to analyze, design and interrogate datasets related to adipose tissue biology.

Specific duties include:

  • Perform analysis of next-generation sequencing datasets including single cell/nuclear RNA sequencing data, bulk RNA sequencing data using existing tools.
  • Coordinate data storage and management for next generation sequencing data
  • Participate as a team member in experimental design and data analysis
  • Draft and publish manuscripts related to the project and scientific results
  • Collaborate with research and bioinformatic faculty on projects

Required Qualifications*

  • Employees in this classification are required to have a minimum of a Bachelor degree in a recognized field of science or learning which is directly related to the duties of the position.
  • Experience in at least two domains characteristic of the bioinformatics, including at least one biological/biomedical/clinical science and one quantitative/informatics/computing science, with aptitude for others
  • Proficiency in R and/or Python.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent capacity to work with others in a collaborative environment.
Ability to implement and interact with high-performance computing clusters

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience in designing, developing, and maintaining bioinformatic pipelines single cell and bulk transcriptomic analysis in packages such as Seurat, bioconductor, or DESeq2.
  • Masters degree in data science, computer science, bioinformatics or related fields.
