Beeper says Apple is blocking some iMessages, but there is a fix

Here we go again: After investigation reports that some users are not receiving iMessages on Beeper Mini and Beeper Cloud, Beeper says that Apple appears to be “deliberately blocking” delivery of iMessages to approximately 5% of Beeper Mini users. The company says uninstalling and reinstalling the app fixes the issue, and that it’s working on a broader fix (although that apparently won’t be in place tonight).

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Beeper’s new claim, nor did it respond to my initial request for comment. But given that the company has blocked Beeper Mini before, it’s no surprise that it appears to be taking action against the app again.

The problems appear to have started as early as around 6 p.m. ET; at that time, a Edge A staff member reported that they were no longer receiving iMessages in Beeper Mini. We’ve found that some Reddit users have reported not receiving iMessages either, but others say things are still working for them, which would match Beeper’s explanation that only some users are affected. Beeper’s status site reports no issues.

Beeper launched the original Beeper Mini, which lets Android owners use iMessage with just their phone number, on December 5, but Apple found a way to shut it down three days later. Beeper got Beeper Mini working again on Monday, but it only works with an Apple ID.

Updated December 13 at 10:00 p.m. ET: Added new information from Beeper.
