On Wednesday, Rockstar Games officially confirmed that-after many years of waiting-the following Grand Theft AuthorThe game will finally be revealed via a trailer in early December. Internet users naturally go wild over the news and this marks the end of a bizarre era of endless speculation and diversions.
Rockstar’s open-world crime simulator, Grand Theft Auto Vlaunched on Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2013 (see on Amazon). In the 10 years since its release, it has become one of the best-selling video games in history. And shortly after it launched on consoles, people started asking, “When will the next one be available?” RGT will the match be announced? In the past, time between RGT principal payments often lasted between three and five years. But this time it was a lot longer just wait for confirmation of the next entry in the series. During this decade of endless waiting, things got weird, fans grew desperate, and rumors endlessly flooded the web.
The first days of GTA VI rumors
Barely four years after the release of GTA V and its multiplayer component, GTA Onlinethe players were already troll the community about the missing GTA VI. In 2018, pirates filled GTA Online with fake adsallegedly from Rockstar, claiming that GTA VI pre-orders were live and that the game would be released in 2019. That, uh… didn’t happen.
In 2020, desperate fans were poring over every last detail to try to determine the release date of Grand Theft Auto VIor even just when Rockstar would officially confirm the game’s existence. At some point, a random robot artwork on the official Rockstar Games website has become a topic for fan theories. (It turned out to be nothing. That’s the case with 99% of these things.)
Fans even found a dirt road in Virginia using the coordinates of a GTA Online update the trailer and reconnect it to GTA VI. According to some, the road had a shape similar to that of “VI”. I’m not sure if this was intentional on Rockstar’s part, but it pissed off the community again as they tried to relate the route to their theories. Maybe the next RGT would the game take place in this part of the country? Or maybe it will be a rural theme RGT Payment? (From what we know GTA VInone of these theories came to fruition.)
The online industry was built on GTA VI speculation
Over time, fans became more and more desperate as Rockstar provided them with very little to satisfy their desire for GTA VI Info. At this point, a cottage industry focused on “GTA VI rumors” had fully formed on social media, YouTube, Reddit, and less reputable outlets. This lead to GTA VI online trends again and again as trolls spread false rumors that were picked up by fan accounts and then reported by smaller media outlets whose stories were shared on Reddit and YouTube, leading to more speculation and fan stories before it all collapses into a pile of lies and deception. And this continued for years.
In 2021, one fan – perhaps influenced by this endless cycle of rumors –interrupted an episode of a live television show and requested information about Grand Theft Auto VI. The show, host, and network had no connection to Rockstar Games or Take-Two, but that didn’t stop this fan from demanding answers.
“What I want to know is where the hell is GTA VI“, the man shouted live on television, “I’ve been waiting for eight years GTA VI!“
Desperate fans even searched for the remastered and not-so-great GTA Trilogy collecting clues. And they found something: A displaced image of a house that appeared to be located in Florida and showed a UFO above it. Now that we know that in 2023…based on leaks and reports-that the next main RGT The game will likely take place in Vice City, Florida, so it’s possible this clue will point fans in the right direction after all. Even if this is the case, the record of community rumors and theories is rather poor.
The end of a strange and exhausting era
Finally, last year Rockstar Games confirmed they are making another one Grand Theft Auto. Has this stopped fan speculation? No way! As we have already mentioned, an industry had formed around RGT the speculation and these content creators were not going to stop. They still had the opportunity to spread more rumors about fake trailers and fake release dates. And that’s exactly what they did, designating GTA Online shirts as clues And running on stage at the Game Awards pretend…Bill Clinton wants to play GTA VI…?
Then, in September 2022, the first big blow to the GTA VI The rumor ecosystem of content creators happened. A massive and unprecedented leak of early Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay hit on the Internet.
Within hours, fans cataloged each clip and began putting it under the microscope. Some have started using clips to build GTA VI’the map. Others combed through every leaked video looking for everything details about the game’s plot or characters. For the first time in almost a decade, RGT fans had something real to watch and Take-Two Interactive’s lawyers couldn’t stop them. Now that people knew who the main protagonists were, where the game took place, and a host of other details, the industry around GTA IV the rumors were starting to die down.
Before Rockstar Confirms December Trailer Release, the latter parts of the speculation machine spent the final months of this era predicting and re-predicting when the game would be announced, teased, or officially revealed. All these random online predictions were wrong, even a high-profile reveal from October.
Finally, on November 7 Bloomberg reported one GTA VI the trailer was coming in December and the next day Rockstar confirmed it.
And so now we wait, for something RGT the community has progressed over the past decade. In December, fans will finally be able to see the first official reveal of the upcoming Grand Theft Auto game after a crazy decade of speculation, rumors, hoaxes, trolls and leaks.
Once GTA VI is officially a thing Rockstar can talk about, much of that era will be lost to the ether as people move on and focus on real trailers and screenshots. But I will never forget how strange and desperate millions of people are. RGT fans got it when they were forced to wait 10 years for Grand Theft Auto VI.
