Netflix Goes Big on Tamil Content in 2023, Acquires Streaming Rights for 18 New Movies

Netflix has announced a big expansion of its Tamil film slate in 2023, with the global streaming giant acquiring the rights to broadcast 18 Tamil-language films. All 18 films will be released throughout the year after wrapping their theatrical releases, according to Netflix’s statement. With this, Netflix is ​​focusing on serving fans of regional language films, with the lucrative Tamil film industry getting a big boost from the announcement. Popular upcoming releases including Dhanush Vaathi’s star and Vignesh Shivan-directed working title AK 62 make the list.

“Our audience has a huge appetite for authentic local and global stories across India and we want to give them more of what they love. Films like Beast, Doctor and Gatta Kushti have been loved and sparked conversations among our audiences around the world and we are confident that our new lineup of Tamil films will have the same effect,” said Monika Shergill, VP – Content at Netflix. Netflix hopes to capitalize on global interest in these films, allowing viewers around the world to watch films that may not be released widely theatrically outside of major regional markets. “The slate showcases a variety of films across multiple genres and showcases the wealth of creative talent in South India and with the work we do behind the scenes around our voice acting and subtitles, we are delighted to make these films accessible to a wider audience across India and all corners of the world,” Shergill continued.

As mentioned, many of these movies will be available in multiple languages, thanks to Netflix’s dubbing and subtitling work. This will include Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada in most cases, although some titles are also available to stream in Hindi.

The film slate includes various releases throughout the year from different production companies, with six releases from Lyca Productions including ChandraMukhi 2, Naai Sekar Returns, the tentatively titled AK 62, and three untitled projects still in production. Others in the list of upcoming Netflix releases include Aaryan, Gatta Kushti, Iraivan, Irugapatru, Japan, Jigar Thanda Double X, Maamannan, Revolver Rita, Thalaikoothal, Thangalaan, Varalaru Mukkiyam and Dhanush starrer Vaathi, which was filmed simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu.
