Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi reportedly received a mandate from Marvel Studios to “make this movie in under two hours,” according to podcaster Joanna Robinson. Oddly enough, we wondered if that was the case in our Thor: Love and Thunder review – and lo and behold, it turned out to be the case. It’s said that Waititi didn’t really get a “blank cheque” on the fourth Thor film, although he enjoyed more freedom this time around than when working on its predecessor Thor: Ragnarok. The director, anyway, had to “cut a ton of stuff”, resulting in a final running time of 119 minutes.
It is not known, however, who issued the warrant and nothing is known of the reason behind it. Robinson said on a recent episode of The Ringer’s House of R podcast, “Taika having a blank check on this is absolutely not the case. He’s had more leeway than he had with Ragnarok. , but there was a mandate to bring this movie in under two hours. It comes in under two hours and they cut a ton of stuff from that movie.
Thor: Love and Thunder review: A mad rush that underutilizes everyone
His comments come days after it was reported that several cameos had been cut from Thor: Love and Thunder. Jeff Goldblum and Peter Dinklage were set to return as Grandmaster and Eitri respectively. Additionally, Lena Headey was set to make her Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) debut with the fourth Thor film, but his scenes did not see the light of day.
Waititi acknowledged those cuts, saying they were necessary in the “natural course of editing”. He also said he wasn’t a fan of the “Director’s Cut”, which suggests that it’s highly unlikely we’ll be able to see the unedited version.
Natalie Portman, who plays astrophysicist Jane Foster/Mighty Thor, also addressed these changes last week, noting that “entire sequences, planets and characters have been cut.”
