A new Avatar animated series, featuring an earthbender, is reportedly in the works at Avatar Studios and Paramount. According to Avatar News, the series follows The Legend of Korra, which is itself a sequel to the original The Last Airbender series, and is set to drop on Paramount+ in 2025. The independent source, which has an excellent but flawed, claims in besides that the series will likely release after the untitled animated film Avatar: The Last Airbender releases in October 2025.
Earlier this year, Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation confirmed in a presentation that they were looking to expand Avatar: The Last Airbender Universe with three animated films. Lauren Montgomery, who worked as a screenwriter on the Emmy-winning original series, is attached to direct the first film. According to Avatar News, the two projects — the movie and the aforementioned Earthbender series — aiming for a 2025 release are no coincidence.
“2025 will be a HUGE launch year for Avatar Studios’ animated universe, with the adult film Aang hitting theaters on October 10, 2025, as well as this new series streaming the same year,” it read. “It’s no mistake on my part that they intentionally release both in the same year – as part of a much larger plan.” Take this bit with a grain of salt as no official source has attested to the movie centering on an adult version of Aang. The report mentions that delays are a possibility, but remains firm on the idea that Avatar Studios is working on “several projects in parallel”.
Meanwhile, on Twitter, Netflix is teasing an update for its live-action reimagining of Avatar: The Last Airbender, which sees mystical child Aang and his companions Katara and Sokka trying to restore peace to a war-torn world. Original anime-style series creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino were attached as executive producers and showrunners, but later left due to creative differences. In an open letter confirming his exit from the project, DiMartino had this to say, “Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar has the potential to be good. It could turn out to be a sight that many of you will end up enjoying. But what I can be certain of is that whatever version ends up on screen, it won’t be what Bryan and I imagined or planned to do.
Last year, Netflix announced the main cast of its live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, which included Gordon Cormier (Lost in Space) as Airbender Aang, Kiawentiio (Rutherford Falls) as the hopeful drifter Katara, Ian Ousley (13 Reasons Why) as his brother Sokka, and Dallas Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) as the Fire Nation Crown Prince , Zuko.
If confirmed, the new Avatar anime series will drop on Paramount+ in 2025.
