A new Star Wars movie is reportedly in development, with scribe Damon Lindelof co-writing the screenplay. According to Deadline, Lucasfilm has a new Star Wars project in the works and has set up Ms. Marvel Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy as director. The project is still in its early stages and does not currently share any information about Lindelof’s partners on the script. This film is distinct from other upcoming Star Wars feature films, helmed by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and Taika Waititi.
As previously reported, Obaid-Chinoy is already associated with Disney, directing two episodes of the Ms. Marvel series, set in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She rose to prominence as the first Pakistani-born filmmaker to win the Oscar, thanks to the 2012 documentary Saving Face, followed by A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness in 2016. She is also attached to the adaptation by Paramount Pictures of the science fiction novel “Brilliance”, starring Will Smith.
Meanwhile, co-writer Lindelof is best regarded for his work on HBO’s 2019 limited series. watchmen and ABC’s Lost, earning Primetime Emmy Awards for both. In the feature film department, he shares writing credits for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, Star Trek Into Darkness and World War Z.
2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was the last film in Lucasfilm’s franchise to hit theaters, after which it shifted its focus to television projects, via Disney+. While plot details are being kept under wraps, Deadline notes that this new Star Wars movie, in particular, has “the most momentum” of any film currently in development at the studio. The big screen future for the franchise has been in flux since 2019, with most recently the Patty Jenkins spin-off film Rogue Squadron being pulled from Disney’s production schedule. The film was supposed to be released in December 2023, but it is now on the back burner.
Other projects include a film produced by the aforementioned Feige, with by Loki Michael Waldron serving as scribe. The latter was recently hired to write the now-delayed Avengers: Secret Wars, which will be released on May 1, 2026. Filmmaker Taika Waititi – who already has experience directing The Mandalorian, has another Star Wars feature in preparation for.
