Super Mario Bros. movie trailer has fallen – in English and Hindi. During the Nintendo Direct event held early Friday (in India), Universal Pictures unveiled the trailer for its upcoming animated film, based on the video game icon. Despicable Me Illumination Entertainment is directing the film, under the direction of the duo Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic. Matthew Fogel, best known for Minions: The Rise of Gru and the second Lego Movie, is the writer. The movie Super Mario Bros. is released in April 2023 in cinemas. Nintendo previously dropped a poster as part of the promotional campaign.

Super Mario Bros. movie trailer seems heavily derived from the “story” of the main games, with the villainous Bowser (Jack Black), in search of the iconic Super Stars. You see his magma-fueled floating island anchored on an island of penguins, as he gets a grand introduction as the king of the Koopas, a turtle-like race in the franchise. “Open the doors,” he commands, only to encounter small snowballs thrown at him by a group of penguins. “This is just a taste of our fury, are you giving in?” asks their leader. As you’d expect, Bowser denies it, spouting flames and destroying the city gates.

Super Mario Bros. movie trailer then moves on to the Mushroom Kingdom, where we’re introduced to our titular plumber, voiced by Chris Pratt. This casting was the subject of ridicule online, as fans didn’t trust the actor to deliver the “woo-hoo!” Mario’s iconic, high-pitched Italian. And that remains true. While the character does not say much elsewhere, “What is this place?” you can clearly tell that there is no accent or rate change underneath. It’s just Pratt playing himself – predictable.
In an interview with Variety earlier this year, he claimed his voice was “unlike anything you’ve heard before in the world of Mario.” Super Mario Bros. movie trailer ends with Keegan Michael-Key’s toad escorting him through the bustling kingdom, the main attraction being Princess Peach’s castle towering in the distance.

Besides original video game creator Shigeru Miyamoto, only Pratt and Black made an appearance at the premiere, talking about their memories with that franchise.
The Mario movie also features the voices of Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit) as Princess Peach and Seth Rogen (Superbad) as Donkey Kong. Charlie Day’s Luigi was also shown briefly, at the end, being chased by a horde of zombie Koopas. Charles Martinet, who originally voiced Mario and Luigi in the video games, is also involved in an undisclosed role.
The movie Super Mario Bros. is scheduled for release April 7, 2023 in theaters worldwide. In India, the movie Super Mario Bros. will be released in English and Hindi.
