Job Description
The Technology Development Lab at NYGC supports cutting-edge research through scientific collaboration, focusing on innovative single-cell and spatial genomic assay and tool development, optimization and application.The Senior Research Scientist in the Technology Development Lab will work with a highly motivated team towards the development and implementation of novel strategies for genomics research. The ideal candidate will have a well-established background in molecular or cell biology with applicable experience in single-cell or spatial multi-omics technologies. Additional experience in imaging technologies or NGS-based platforms is preferred. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required, as this role will work on an interdisciplinary team and actively collaborate across multiple functional groups to develop and implement innovative new technologies into production. The ability to thrive in a fast-paced and shifting environment is essential. This position will report to the Associate Director of Technology Development and be responsible for supervision of junior staff.
Key Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Lead implementation of single-cell, multi-modal and spatial methods, developing robust, scalable assays for application to collaborative and production research projects;
- Collaborate closely with colleagues in the Technology Innovation, Technology Development, Production Lab, and Computational Biology teams, facilitating knowledge transfer and cross-functional coordination;
- Analyze, interpret and report high-quality research through journal articles, posters and impactful presentations to colleagues including senior leadership, external collaborators and at scientific conferences;
- Develop and implement novel strategies to prepare samples and sequencing libraries at scale for methods that capture single-cell-omics and spatially-resolved data;
- Independently plan, design and execute experiments to support collaborative projects, grant funded research and internal assay development, optimization and troubleshooting efforts, managing various aspects of a project;
- Contribute to existing lab projects and improving current laboratory methods;
- Contribute to writing and editing grant applications and providing dedicated effort to support funded work;
- Collaborate with internal and external research groups to offer relevant expertise and guidance with project design and to conduct experiments using cutting-edge techniques in support of project goals;
- Maintain extensive knowledge of the current scientific literature and be a source of knowledge for the team and the Center in applying molecular biology tools to solve specific research questions;
- Actively participate in lab meetings, sharing and expanding the knowledge of the team and obtaining information relevant to the team’s goals; and,
- Supervise junior staff including mentoring, coaching, training, prioritization and oversight of day-to-day activities.
Required Skills
- Relevant PhD degree with experience in single-cell or spatial biology, or BSc/MSc with significant equivalent experience;
- Experience working with cell-based assays or spatial biology platforms;
- Extensive knowledge of and experience with modern molecular biology tools including prior experience working with single-cell suspensions and/or tissue samples, such as cell sorting, nuclei isolation, dissociation, sectioning, staining, or imaging;
- Excellent collaboration, interpersonal and communication skills and ability to effectively work as part of a team;
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and lead junior staff effectively;
- Exceptional organizational, time management and critical thinking skills;
- Proven attention to detail with excellent planning and experimental design skills;
- Excellent analytical and project management skills and ability to prioritize and multitask;
- Strong computational skills highly preferred.

About the New York Genome Center
The New York Genome Center (NYGC) is an independent, nonprofit, academic research organization dedicated to advancing genomic research. NYGC scientists and staff are furthering new approaches to diagnosing and treating neurological diseases and cancer through their unique capabilities in whole genome sequencing, RNA sequencing, state-of-the art analytics, and the development of genomic tools. NYGC concentrates specifically on disease-based research in the following areas: neuropsychiatric disease (autism, schizophrenia, bipolar); neurodegenerative disease (ALS, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s), and cancer.
Located in Lower Manhattan, the New York Genome Center was founded by and remains closely affiliated with the leading academic medical centers and research universities in the New York region, engaging in research projects with and for these institutions.
