Spotify’s latest update visibly changes the audio streaming service to improve the experience for your eyes rather than your ears. Spotify Mix – the company’s new bespoke font – is rolling out starting today, replacing the circular font variant that Spotify currently uses across its apps and desktop experiences.
The confusing name is a tribute to “the dynamic and evolving nature of audio culture over the years,” according to Rasmus Wängelin, global head of brand design at Spotify. Spotify Mix was developed in collaboration with Berlin-based foundry Dinamo Typefaces, with Wängelin saying the new variable font design is “literally, a remix” born from merging elements from a variety of different font styles.
“The result is a sans serif font that blends features of classic and contemporary styles, creating a distinctive and unique look,” explains Wängelin in Spotify’s press release. “We subtly incorporated sound wave shapes to evoke a rhythmic sensation. The combination of sharp angles and gentle curves gives the font a distinctive character that typically resembles Spotify.
The company intends to use Spotify Mix on everything from playlists to marketing campaigns. Because it’s a variable font – which basically means that things like weight, width, skew, and other variables can be changed without requiring separate files – it should be very easy to customize for Spotify. This provides some creative flexibility, allowing elements like playlist covers, promos, and other content to appear more varied while still sharing a cohesive design.
The wordmark in Spotify’s logo will also be updated with the new font, already visible on the company’s news portal. Languages with Latin scripts and content written in Vietnamese will be the first to use Spotify Mix, which will be gradually rolled out “over the coming weeks.”
