Samsung’s powerful Galaxy S24 Ultra upgrade confirmed

Samsung has confirmed plans to use AI in its upcoming smartphones, with the Galaxy S24 flagship widely expected to debut the new features. Still, Samsung’s controversial decisions could pose problems in the months to come.

The South Korean company launched its generative AI model as part of the Samsung AI Forum 2023. Called Samsung Gauss, named after Carl Friedrich Gauss, it has three main elements currently used internally: Gauss language to understand language human and develop natural responses, Gauss Code helps in software development for code descriptions and test case creation, and Gauss Image allows the creation and modification of images.

Update: Sunday November 12: Following the public introduction of Samsung Gauss, more potential uses of the company’s generative AI capabilities in the upcoming Galaxy S24 have been revealed. Samsung smartphones will collect a lot of personal data to achieve this. With user privacy becoming a critical factor in purchasing decisions, keeping this data on the handset and processing the information locally will be a priority, which will only be possible thanks to the increased AI capabilities of the latest Snapdragon and Exynos chipsets.

“AI Live Translate Call will be integrated with the native calling feature and will enable real-time audio and text translation. With the help of this new Galaxy AI-based tool, users will be able to conduct phone conversations with people who are talking a different language.”

While translation options have been available in the past, these have typically been in-person tools that can operate with much more latency due to both partners being present in the chat providing visual feedback. This is not available on a call, where the speed of natural language translation, in both directions, is essential.

This would represent considerable flexibility of Samsung’s AI capabilities and an easy-to-understand use case that consumers can relate to.

Samsung also said products featuring its generative AI models could launch “early next year.” One product line fits this timescale and would have the hardware to process some AI on-device while offloading other routines to the cloud; the Samsung Galaxy S24 family.

AI is becoming the key element of the current generation of smartphones; Google promoting the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro as AI-driven smartphones started the avalanche, with other smartphone makers and vendors joining in. Oddly enough, Apple is nowhere to be found.

As one of the leading Android partners, Samsung’s promotion of AI will continue to validate this space to designers, engineers and consumers. However, there are still some issues specific to Samsung and its community that need to be resolved, such as silicon itself.

Samsung has committed to using a mix of its own Exynos 2400 chipsets alongside Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipsets in the S24 family; The high-end Galaxy S24 Ultra will exclusively ship with Qualcomm’s solution, while the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ models will be a mix of Exynos and Qualcomm, with each retail region relaunching one or the other.

Both chipsets integrated reality into their respective AI capabilities when they launched. Samsung will look to offer a similar experience on both handsets. Still, with AI routines hardcoded into the silicon, many in the community will remember the different levels of performance and power offered by the two manufacturers, with the Qualcomm-powered Galaxy handsets widely considered to be the better option.

While this won’t impact Samsung’s new AI capabilities in the cloud, the focus will be on AI in the new Galaxy S24 handset. Samsung won’t want a capacity gap between the Exynos and Snapdragon models. Otherwise, it will face the prospect of two levels of AI in the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+. Given the visibility of AI in today’s market, the controversial decision to use two chipsets could be more significant in 2024 than in previous years.

Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy S24 family in early 2024, with many eyeing an earlier-than-expected event in January.
