PS5 DualSense Edge controller unveiled, with customizable sticks, button mapping, and more

The PS5 DualSense Edge wireless controller has been announced. On Tuesday during Gamescom Opening Night Live, Sony unveiled its new premium controller for the PlayStation 5. At first glance, the controller looks like the normal PS5 DualSense, but has added benefits to raise the standards. The new DualSense Edge wireless controller is “ultra-customizable”, allowing you to swap out thumbstick caps and set control mappings to your liking. The DualSense Edge is essentially Sony’s (very late) answer to Xbox’s Elite line of controllers. Currently, there is no launch window for the DualSense Edge wireless controller.

In a PlayStation blog post, the company listed all the new features that come with the DualSense Edge wireless controller. This would be the first time Sony has dabbled in customizable controllers, as previously gamers had to rely on third-party companies like Scuf Gaming for similar features. The new PS5 controller offers a range of hardware and software options to create a personalized gaming experience.

Ultra-customizable DualSense Edge controls

The new DualSense Edge wireless controller lets you remap or disable specific button inputs that get in the way. Analog stick sensitivity and dead zones can also be adjusted – how far your stick travels before it’s recognized in-game. Additionally, PS5 players can play with the travel distance to manually reduce the time it takes for faster entries. Reducing travel distance equals faster entry into competitive FPS games.

DualSense Edge Control Profiles

After finding your ideal control settings, PS5 players can save them to unique profiles and swap them on the fly. Let’s say on profile 1 you have a lower camera sensitivity for better aiming in FPS games. So instead of having to adjust manually when switching to a narrative game like God of War, you can simply set these configurations in advance and go through the software. You can access this by pressing the Fn (function) button on the DualSense Edge to bring up a menu, allowing you to swap profiles, in addition to volume controls and chat balance.

DualSense Edge: interchangeable stick caps and back buttons

Like the Xbox Elite controller, Sony has now introduced interchangeable stick caps and rear buttons. In the package, you get three types of caps – standard, high dome and low dome – which can be replaced easily depending on your palm size and finger alignment, helping you stay comfortable in the game while maintaining a good grip.

Additionally, the DualSense Edge comes with two sets of interchangeable rear buttons – a new addition – which can be configured to be any other button input. Previous reports had pointed to this move by Sony, although it didn’t have an official name, so people called it “DualSense Pro”.

PlayStation notes that the stick pods are also replaceable, but additional units will be sold separately. Besides these changes, the DualSense Edge wireless controller retains all the goodness of the standard version, including haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, a built-in microphone, motion controls, and more. A braided USB Type-C cable and a carrying case will also be included in the package.

The PS5 DualSense Edge wireless controller does not yet have a release window or price range. More information on this will be shared in the coming months. The standard PS5 DualSense controller is priced at Rs. 6,490 in India.
