Nothing Phone 1's peak brightness is 700 nits, not 1,200 nits as originally advertised: report

Nothing Phone 1, the first smartphone from the British brand, led by former OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, was unveiled to the world last month. At launch, it was announced that the peak brightness of the 6.55-inch Full HD+ OLED display will reach up to 1,200 nits. However, a new report suggests that currently the phone can only deliver 700 nits. The report says Nothing will provide a future update to unlock the additional brightness range. The Nothing Phone 1’s screen has Corning Gorilla Glass protection and offers HDR10+ support, a minimum brightness of 500 nits and a pixel density of 402 ppi.

According to a report from ComputerBase, the Nothing Phone 1 on its website screen, which was rated at a peak brightness of 1,200 nits, can actually only do 700 nits of brightness. The report said Nothing had made changes to its website and reduced the maximum brightness. However, Gadgets 360 was unable to independently verify the changes on the Nothing website.

In a July test, the German publication found that the maximum rating would never exceed 700 nits. The tests were reportedly done with medium picture levels and with various HDR videos. Nothing was quoted by the post as saying, “maximum values are around 700 nits for brightness. Nothing will adjust that in the future.”

In follow-up coverage, Nothing has confirmed to ComputerBase that it is looking to increase the phone’s screen brightness 1 to 1,200 via a future software update. “This decision was made to ensure a balanced user experience with regards to heat and battery consumption,” he added.

The Nothing Phone 1 (Review) was unveiled last month and its price in India starts at Rs. 32,999 for the base variant of 8GB RAM + 128GB storage.

The Nothing Phone 1 specs include a 120Hz refresh rate display, 50MP dual camera setup, 16MP selfie sensor, and up to 256GB of UFS 3.1 inbuilt storage. As mentioned, it is powered by the Snapdragon 778G+ SoC paired with up to 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM. The Nothing Phone 1 packs a 4,500mAh battery with support for 33W wired charging, 15W Qi wireless charging, and 5W reverse charging.
